Winona Ryder insists being caught shoplifting "wasn’t the crime of the century".
The ‘Stranger Things’ actress was infamously convicted of attempting to steal items amounting to $5,500 from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills in 2001, and says the incident allowed her to take some much-needed time out from her movie career.
She told Porter magazine: "Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop.
"I won’t get into what happened, but it wasn’t what people think. And it wasn’t like the crime of the century! But it allowed me time that I really needed, where I went back to San Francisco and got back into things that… I just had other interests, frankly.
Though the 44-year-old actress admitted people have suggested she undergo cosmetic surgery, she has no interest in going under the knife because she enjoys getting older.
She said: "I love getting older. I think it has to do with always being the kid on set. It’s interesting because, these days, [cosmetic surgery] is treated almost like hygiene. I’ve had people say to me, ‘Oh, you should, you know…’ and they point to my forehead. ‘Get that seen to!’ But I’m like, ‘No! I’ve been waiting so long for that to happen!’ "
And unlike other stars, Winona has no interest in moving behind the camera because she is still so excited by her acting career.
She said: ‘I can only see my own character’s point of view! I’m just not a business person, you know? I wish I was in a way. But acting still excites me. I don’t sleep the day before a new job. I’m sure it’s psychosomatic but still.’
