Brian Blessed would "love" to be Doctor Who if Peter Capaldi quits after series 10.
The 79-year-old actor - who turns 80 in October - was offered the role as the titular Time Lord back in 1966 but was forced to turn it down because of existing commitments.
However, he fancies getting his hands on the key to the TARDIS now if current Doctor Capaldi decides he's had enough.
Speaking in this month's CALIBRE Quarterly magazine, he said: "I would love to play the Doctor, absolutely."
Blessed - who had been one of the main stars on 'Z-Cars' at the time - can remember sitting down with the producers to discuss taking over the part from First Doctor William Hartnell and jokingly told them he wanted to portray the character as Charlie Chan, the fictional Chinese-American detective.
The 'Flash Gordon' star recalled: "I was actually in talks with the producers, who said, 'We're very keen for you to be the Doctor, to follow William Hartnell, and we'd like you to play him very young. You've got a very vivid imagination, Brian. You can be quite normal and then also very, very eccentric.'
"Now, it would have been a big gamble for them at the time, to make the Doctor so young. I said to them, 'Well, there's two ways I can play this - very much based on my own personality, because space is my big love.'
"I would have given it an intensity and humour. The other way I suggested of doing it was, 'whooo, whooo, whooo.' It's almost oriental sounding, you see. I was tempted, with very fine makeup, and a great voice coach, to make him like Charlie Chan. They must have thought 'Christ! Brian's crazy bloody imagination!' "
Brian did go on to star in 'Doctor Who' playing King Yrcanos in the 1986 serial 'Mindwarp' opposite Sixth Doctor Colin Baker.
The eccentric star also revealed he punched Capaldi 20 years ago on the set on 'The History of Tom Jones' and joked he would love to fight with the 57-year-old actor again, maybe even on the 'Doctor Who' set.
He told the publication: "At one point his character hits mine across the face with his glove as a challenge, and I go, 'Ooooh', and chin him with a left hook!
"Peter will always agree with this I'm sure. As I throw the left hook, he puts his face forward! As I hit his head at the side, I pulled it, I pulled the punch as I felt it hit his cheekbone, and I yelled, 'He's hit!' His legs were flapping, his arms start going and he's got this gash across his forehead.
"I would love to be in Doctor Who, if they could find me another part, at least so Peter and I could fight again!"

Gaz Beadle kept a spreadsheet of the women he had sex with, but stopped counting one he reached 700.
The 'Geordie Shore' lothario has admitted he recorded the details of all his conquests on an Excel document on his computer but once he reached the massive number he lost interest in maintaining his love log.
The 27-year-old star told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I had a spreadsheet on my computer up until about 700 girls. I stopped counting when I got to a certain number.
"It was an Excel spreadsheet so I could just login whenever and put dots down when I'd done another girl."
Gaz - who is now back with his on/off girlfriend Charlotte Crosby, who he has romanced since the show's debut in 2011 - believes the total number of women he has bedded is 1,000.
He told BANG Showbiz: "I know kind of what number now ... It's about a thousand."
However, the heartthrob has changed his womanising ways now he has rekindled his relationship Charlotte, whom he last split from after their Christmas fling.
He said: "I did [keep count] but I don't really care now. We're seeing each other. I'm not pulling anyone else and she's not getting with anyone else.
"We're not putting labels on it straight away, but if it keeps going like this, there's no reason we couldn't be together next month."
Gaz and Charlotte will return for series 12 of 'Geordie Shore' on MTV on Tuesday (15.03.16) at 10pm.

Kevin McNally is to star in a remake of 'Hancock's Half Hour' as part of the BBC's Sitcom Season - which celebrates 60 years since the show moved from radio to TV.
McNally - who played Joshamee Gibbs in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' - will play Tony Hancock in the revamp and will be joined by theatre actor Robin Sebastian, who is reprising Kenneth Williams' roles.
McNally has already played Hancock in a radio remake the two actors will film a new version of 'The New Neighbour' episode.

Aliona Vilani has claimed the 'Strictly Come Dancing' workload didn't give her any time to have children.
The 31-year-old dancer - who, along with Jay McGuiness, was crowned the winner of the BBC One ballroom show last year - quit the programme to start a family with her husband Vincent Kavanagh, insisting being on the series left her with no days off.
Speaking to Digital Spy at the TRIC Awards, she said: " 'Strictly...' is a really full-on show, so basically you have to take five months out of your life. You don't see your friends, you don't see your family, you don't have any days off. Let's say I want to start a family and have a baby - I don't want to take five months out of my life and not be with my child, especially in the beginning. So I think I really had to step away."
Aliona doesn't regret her decision saying it's good that the "cast is evolving" but she wishes that things could have been different.
She said: "When I decided I knew what I was doing, but I kind of have no other choice. I really want to start a family with my husband and I can't just take five months out of my life and not be with my family, without any days off.
"I don't mind if I would have a day or two days off - maybe that would change my mind - but with 'Strictly...' you can't have that. Every year the cast is always amazing, and every year there's new dancers, and some of the previous dancers would leave the show, so it's good.
"The show is evolving, the cast is evolving, so it's amazing. I think it's good, it's healthy."

Dan Osborne wants people to "get over" his threats to his ex-girlfriend.
The former 'TOWIE' star threatened to "stab" Megan Tomlin, with whom he has son Teddy, two, during a furious row last year but Dan thinks it is time people moved on and forgot about what he did.
He tweeted: "I said something I did not mean and in anger a year and 9 months ago!! get over ittt!!.. The bottom line is..
"I never physically hurt anyone.. I said some things in anger in THE worst time of my life.. That's it!! (sic)."
Referring to how the argument was recorded and released he added: "If everyone on earth had there arguments recorded.. I am sure 95% of you would listen back and hear things you OBVIOUSLY never meant..
"It's old and boring now.. We're all happy and doing great, all moved on.. So now time for those last few people to do that too (sic)."
Dan's comments came after his fiancee Jacqueline Jossa blasted 'Loose Women' for interrogating her about their relationship.
The 23-year-old actress, who is currently on maternity leave following the birth of her daughter Ella 13 months ago, was furious as she thought interview on the live lunchtime show would be about being a young mother when, instead, she was asked about Dan's threats to Megan.
And Dan, 23, also hit out at the show, saying: "Those questions should have been questions asked to me.. Not Jacqueline AT ALL and I think she handled it very well actually.
"I felt bad for Jac if anything, she was actually looking forward to going on the show to talk about getting back to work and our daughter (sic)."

Julian Ovenden is concerned he'll end up an "absent father."
The 'Downton Abbey' star - who is known for playing handsome ladies' man Charles Blake in the period drama - may have a busy globe-trotting career but he's adamant he won't let it get in the way of raising his two children Johnny, six, and Audrey, four, whom he has with his wife Kate.
Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, he said: "It [going away for work] gets harder the older they get because when they were younger, I was quite thankful for the sleep and the quiet and now schools are so full on now. I'm away for two days and so much has happened.
"Obviously, you want to be with your kids when they're this age, you really want to enjoy it as much as you can. I don't want to be an absent parent."
But, although he likes being a hands-on dad, the 39-year-old actor doesn't want to add any more little ones to his brood.
He explained: "I don't think there are any plans to have any more because our cups are very full at the moment. I've got a dog - he was the first born - so I've already got three kids."
Meanwhile, Julian may be keen to spend as much times as possible with his youngsters but, at the moment, he's busy promoting his forthcoming album 'Be My Love'.
He said of his upcoming release: "Making an album like this has been something I've always wanted to do. I have to pinch myself because I can't believe I've had the opportunity to do it with these musicians, these songs and music that I'm probably the most passionate about."
'Be My Love' is set for release on April 22 on East West.

Kym Marsh is backing Jamie Lomas to return to 'Hollyoaks'.
The former 'Coronation Street' star is delighted with speculation her former partner is to return to the Channel 4 soap - who played gangster Warren Fox between 2006 and 2009 and again in 2011 - because he was a "huge asset" to the show.
She said: "There have been rumours that Jamie might be going back into 'Hollyoaks'. I haven't spoken to him about it but I hope it's true. He's been doing some theatre and he's opening his own theatre school, but I think he was a huge asset when he was in the show.
"He was such a good baddie in 'Hollyoaks'. There is no reason why he couldn't come back as his character was put in prison the last time he was on screen."
Meanwhile, over on 'Corrie', Kym is delighted to have Simon Gregson back as Steve McDonald following a five-month break.
She told OK! magazine: "Simon has started back to work. It was so good to have him back and we were really excited to shoot our first scene together. He looks so well.
"He was supposed to have been in Spain for six months so he had a spray tan. He joked about his hands looking patchy and said, 'I look like I've had a fight with a gingerbread man.' "

Gary 'Gaz' Beadle kept a spreadsheet of the women he slept with - but gave up when he reached 700.
The 'Geordie Shore' star - who is now in a relationship with his co-star Charlotte Crosby - claims to have bedded "thousands" of people but the figure got so high, he had to stop counting.
He said: "Everyone knows my shag number is in the thousands. But I stopped counting when I got to a certain number. I had a spreadsheet on my computer up until about 700 girls.
"It was an Excel spreadsheet so I could just login whenever and put dots down when I'd done another girl."
Despite being settled with Charlotte, the 27-year-old star admitted he still checks out the nude photos he receives from fans on social media.
He told The Sun newspaper: "I get girls sending me pictures on Instagram bent over going: 'If you want to f*** me, here's my number!' If I was lying at home bored and I wanted to sh*g a girl I could find someone within seconds from those pics. It's ridiculous."
While Gaz is committed to Charlotte, he admits the pair need time to figure out "where they are".
He said: "It's different this time with Charlotte. I'm not getting with anyone; she's not getting with anyone. We're just doing our own thing.
"There's all so much pressure so we want to keep it on the down low and then just see what happens. Hopefully by the end of March we'll know where we are."

Jo Brand's 'Getting On' is set to get a sequel.
The 58-year-old comedian is set to reprise her role as geriatric nurse Kim Wilde for the new three-part series 'Going Forward' as she waves goodbye to the nitty-gritty NHS and heads out into the big wide world as a community care assistant on a low pay and an overbearing manager.
She said: "Having failed the auditions for 'Darts Players' Wives', it's lovely to slip into a glamorous lilac nurse's tunic and step into the exotic world of community health care."
The funnywoman will star alongside Omid Djalili as he becomes her on-screen husband Dave, a self employed private hire driver battling long days and grumpy customers, when they only thing they have to take their minds off their demanding jobs is their unfinished extension.
BBC4 editor Cassian Harrison said: "I'm delighted to have Jo and the 'Getting On' team returning to BBC4.
"'Getting On' was a defining series for the channel and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the story has moved on in the intervening years."
'Getting On', which was set on a hospital ward, first hit screens in 2009 and ran until 2010 when, despite popular demand, it was not commissioned for another series.
'Going Forward' will hit screens later this year.
