Top Boy revival gets second series on Netflix

‘Top Boy’ is returning for a second season on Netflix.
The online streaming platform has confirmed the gritty crime drama – which initially ran for two series on Channel 4 until it was cancelled in 2014 – will be back for another run.
On Facebook, Netflix shared a snapshot of a screenplay titled ‘Killing No Murder’, with the caption: "Confirmed: Season 2 of Top Boy is happening.
"Dushane, Sully, Jamie and Shelley will return. Stay tuned."
The series – which is set on the fictional Summerhouse estate in Hackney, London – stars Ashley Walters, Kane Robinson, Micheal Ward and Simbi Ajikawo, also known as rapper Little Simz.
The original two Channel 4 series were renamed ‘Top Boy: Summerhouse’ and are available on the streaming service, along with the first season of the revival.
Despite the programme getting axed six years ago, it retained some support in the industry, including ‘Hotline Bling’ stay Drake, who is an executive producer on the revival.
This led to a 10-episode reboot last year, which has proven enough of a success to guarantee a second run.
‘Top Boy’ creator and writer Ronan Bennett previously revealed his inspiration behind the series.
After the revival was announced, he said: "Ten years ago, I witnessed a 10-year-old boy dealing drugs outside my local supermarket.
"It made me question what was going on in my own community and led me to create ‘Top Boy.’ "
And returning star Ashley heaped praise on Netflix’s decision to take a chance on the rebooted show.
He added at the time: "It needs to be talked about and the show doesn’t shy away from giving us the platform to tell our story. We can’t change things if we do not acknowledge it and understand it first.
"Netflix is the perfect platform for this show, there aren’t many networks who would be brave enough to keep it this real."
