Tom Hanks’ marriage doesn’t take "vast work".
The ‘Sully’ actor met Rita Wilson when they were in high school, but didn’t get together until much later and have now been wed for 28 years.
Though people think it is hard to maintain a relationship in the public eye, Tom doesn’t think it is much different and he and his wife complement one another very well.
He said: "People say, ‘Jeez, it must be hard to stay married in showbusiness.
"I think it’s hard to stay married anywhere, but if you marry the right person, it might work out. We give each other a natural sense of support for whatever the other wants to pursue.
"Our marriage doesn’t require vast work. We have been married 28 years and dig each other a lot."
The 60-year-old star – who has sons Chester, 26, and Truman, 20, with Rita, as well as Colin, 39, and Elizabeth, 34, with ex-wife Samantha Lewes – admitted he wouldn’t have had the courage to ask Rita out when they were younger, while she has confessed she wouldn’t have been interested in him back then anyway.
He told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "I still can’t believe we were in high school together and I wouldn’t have had the guts to talk to Rita Wilson and she has finally confessed she wouldn’t have given me the time of day if I had.
"So we got married; we didn’t do it lightly, knew what we were doing and there’s just no doubt she was the person for me. I dig her and she puts up with me, so good enough."
Last year, Rita underwent a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and her husband is overwhelmed by her bravery.
He said: "All I can do is bow down before the courage of my wife."
