The Last Dinner Party have won BBC Radio 1’s Sound Of 2024 prize.
The indie rockers – who are made up of Georgia Davies, Lizzie Mayland, Abigail Morris, Aurora Nishevci, and Emily Roberts – were told by former nominee Florence + the Machine that they had won the accolade, which has the likes of Adele, Sam Smith, and 50 Cent among its former winners.
After being informed of their victory, lead singer Abigail told the BBC: “This doesn’t feel real.
“Has anyone got a pillow I can scream into?”
Guitarist Lizzie added: “We’re going to have to do a collective sob.”
Florence praised the band’s “fierce and ferocious” sound and “joyful” live shows as she told them they had been victorious.
The BBC Sound of 2024 was voted for by a panel of more than 140 industry experts and artists, including Olivia Rodrigo, Chase and Status, Jorja Smith, and PinkPantheress.
Pop star Olivia Dean finished second, DJ Peggy Gou was third, singer Tyla was fourth, and soul sensation Elmiene was fifth.
The Last Dinner Party, who met during fresher’s week in London three years ago, were the first guitar band to win the award since Haim’s success in 2013.
FLO won the accolade last year, and PinkPantheress the year before.
Other previous winners include Sigrid in 2018, Jessie J in 2011, Ellie Goulding in 2010, and MIKA in 2007.
50 Cent was the first winner of the annual BBC poll when it was conducted by the BBC News website in 2003.
Last month, The Last Dinner Party were crowned BRITs Rising Star award winners.
They said in a statement at the time: “We are so proud beyond measure to have won the BRITs Rising Star.
“It’s an honour to achieve something so iconic so early on in our career and we can only hope to keep making music that connects with all the incredible people who have listened to and supported us so far. Thank you!”
