The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug leads Empire Award nominations

‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’ leads the Jameson Empire Film Awards nominations.

The second film in the trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ – which was the fourth-highest-grossing film at the UK box office in 2013 – has scored an impressive seven nominations for Best Film, Best Sci-Fi, Actor (Martin Freeman), Male Newcomer (Aidan Turner), Supporting Actor (Richard Armitage), Supporting Actress (Evangeline Lilly), and Director (Peter Jackson).

Freeman will face stiff competition in the public vote from fellow leading men 12 Years A Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor, ‘Filth’ actor James McAvoy, ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’ star Leonardo DiCaprio and Captain Phillips’ Tom Hanks.

Meanwhile, the Best Actress gong will see Amy Adams go up against her ‘American Hustle’ co-star Jennifer Lawrence for her role as Katniss Everdeen in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’.

They are joined by ‘Blue Jasmine’ star Cate Blanchett, Saving Mr. Banks’ Emma Thompson and ‘Gravity’ actress Sandra Bullock.

Meanwhile, ’12 Years A Slave’ has six nominations, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ and ‘Captain Phillips’ both have five and ‘Gravity’ follows with four in the line-up which is chosen solely by the cinemagoing public.

The nominations also feature movies from the last year which were not recognised in the industry-voted awards season, including box-office hits ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘Evil Dead’.
