The Favourite wins big at the BAFTAs

‘The Favourite’ was the big winner at the EE British Academy Film Awards.
The 18th century drama – which stars Emma Stone, Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz – took home seven awards at the ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday night (10.02.19) including Outstanding British Film as well as awards for Olivia for Leading Actress and Rachel for Supporting Actress.
Collecting the gong, the film’s director Yorgos Lanthimos said: "Thank you so much, thank you BAFTA, it’s a great honour … This film took 20 years to make – I contributed to the last 10."
He also went on to thank Emma, Olivia and Rachel, adding: "Of course the three leading ladies that I couldn’t be more proud of."
The film also picked up wins in the Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair categories.
And accepting her Supporting Actress prize, Rachel says she felt as though she had the "greatest luck" starring in the movie.
She shared: "I had the greatest luck in that I played opposite two of the most glorious women. Olivia Colman and Emma Stone, didn’t we have an extraordinary time? Yorgos, your creativity is breathtaking."
It was also a good night for ‘Roma’, which won a total of four awards in the coveted Best Film category as well as Cinematography and Film Not in the English Language. There was also a win for Alfonso Cuarón as Best Director.
Collecting the Best Film prize, Alfonso said: "This time I’m going to read because as you can tell, I blanked and can’t think what to say. I just want to thank Participant Media and Netflix for their faith and courage and I share this award with my amazing cast and crew."
Elsewhere, Rami Malek was named Best Leading Actor for his role as Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, whilst the film also picked up Best Sound. Mahershala Ali’s performance in ‘Green Book’ earned him the Best Supporting Actor gong whilst ‘A Star is Born’ triumphed in the Best Original Music category.
Accepting the award on the behalf of the cast and crew, director Bradley Cooper said: "I got to fulfil a dream I never thought would happen. I share this with Lady Gaga tonight, the music was the heartbeat of this film. I also need to thank Irina for putting up with me while I was trying to make music in our basement for a year."
