Sue Devaney’s Corrie character to be Weatherfield’s new entrepreneur

Sue Devaney’s ‘Coronation Street’ character will make "a few business deals" and will try to find out if Abi Franklin is "genuine" enough for her brother Kevin Webster upon her cobbles return.

The British TV legend will reprise her role as Debbie Webster next week, and the ‘Dinnerladies’ actress has revealed her alter-ego will be wary of Kevin’s (Michael Le Vell) girlfriend Abi (Sally Carman), as well as be the new entrepreneur of Weatherfield.

She said: "Business has brought Debbie back to Weatherfield. She lives in Turkey but she was missing her family. She’s very close to her brother and I think she wanted to be around family more.

"The thing with Debbie is, wherever she travels and whatever she does, she always comes back to home. She has never forgotten where she’s come from. She takes comfort in that and, this time round, she thinks, ‘I quite like it here’.

"I think she’s going to do a few business deals and stuff, but she also wants to make sure her brother is all right. "He is seeing Abi but Debbie wonders, ‘Is she good enough for him? Is she going to be kind to him? Is she going to be nice to him?’ "

Sue returned to ‘Corrie’ as Debbie in October for the first time in 34 years as the character attended her Auntie Vi’s will reading.

But the former ‘Casualty’ star will be back on the cobbles for a much longer stint this time around, and she has loved working with Sally.

She added: "Debbie doesn’t keep her nose out. I think she gets her nose right in the middle of things and thinks: ‘Right, what is going on?’ What she is trying to do is find out if Abi is genuine. Kevin has been hurt so many times, so Debbie wants to make sure it’s a strong relationship because he means the world to her.

"But Debbie is a woman’s woman and I think she is fond of Abi. There is something in Abi that she likes.

"Sally Carman, who plays Abi, is fabulous. I love all my scenes with Sally. I knew Sal before as well, we have a mutual friend, so it was lovely to do my scenes with her."
