Sir Elton John’s mother has died.
The 70-year-old musician has been left in "shock" following his mum Sheila Farebrother’s passing on Monday morning (04.12.17) and took to his Instagram account to pay tribute to her.
Accompanied by a photo of him with his mother, Elton wrote: "So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank-you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton (sic)"
Elton and Sheila had patched up their relationship in May after almost nine years of not speaking to each other.
The ‘Rocket Man’ singer was hospitalised earlier this year with a bacterial infection he contracted in South America and his stint in intensive care led to Elton reaching out to Sheila to end their feud.
On Mother’s Day in the US, Elton made a post on Instagram with the caption: "Dear Mum, Happy Mother’s Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton xo."
Sheila and her famous son fell out in 2008 after Elton requested that his mother cut off all contact with two of their oldest friends, his former driver-turned-personal assistant Bob Halley and ex-manager John Reid, with whom he had fired from his team and had fallen out with.
When Sheila refused to do so during their telephone conversation, Elton broke off contact with her.
In an interview with the Daily Mail newspaper in 2015, Sheila explained the cause of their feud, saying: "It was all so stupid – so petty. I told him, ‘I’m not about to do that and drop them. Bob is like a son to me. He has always been marvellous to me and he lives nearby and keeps an eye on me … Then to my utter amazement, he told me he hated me. And he then banged the phone down. Imagine! To me, his mother!’
"I’m not a person to be controlled or told what I’ve got to do. I’m not being controlled by anybody. I don’t care what it is. Even if I was destitute I wouldn’t be controlled by anybody. Also, why should I be alone and not talk to nice friends nearby and people I’ve known all through his career? I had no intention of dropping John and Bob and I told Elton so. He told me I thought more of Bob Halley than I did of my own son. And to that I said to him, ‘And you think more of that f***ing thing you married than your own mother.’ Those were the last words I spoke to him. That’s what it’s all about. I suppose he was horrified because I dared to disobey."
Elton is married to David Furnish, with whom he has two sons, Zachary, six, and Elijah, four.
