Sherlock for 2015 Christmas special?

‘Sherlock’ could return for a Christmas special in 2015.

Martin Freeman, who plays Dr. John Watson in the BBC detective drama, has suggested he and Benedict Cumberbatch will reunite for a one-off episode next year.

He told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here, if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand."

Filming in early 2015 "looks pretty likely", the star added.

The critically acclaimed drama aired its third series earlier this year but producers have previously revealed a fourth series hinges on Martin and Benedict being available for filming at the same time.

Both stars have become hot properties in film and TV, with Martin starring in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy and a new TV adaptation of ‘Fargo’.

The 42-year-old actor also confirmed his real-life spouse Amanda Abbington would appear in future episodes as Watson’s wife Mary.

He added: "Certainly, yes, for the foreseeable future."

But it appears Amanda’s stint may be short-lived as Martin has hinted ‘Sherlock’ will follow in the footsteps of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes novels.

He said: "While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. So he gets married and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die."
