An announcement from the Swedish Royal Court stated: "Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia are delighted to announce that The Princess is expecting their first child. The birth is expected to take place in April of 2016."
The couple said: "We are so happy and excited to announce that we are expecting our first child. We are very much looking forward to it."

Princess Anne officially opens new Army headquarters

Britain's Princess Royal marked the opening of a new Army headquarters in Stafford yesterday (14.10.15).
Princess Anne visited the site - which has undergone £150 million worth of work to redevelop the site for soldiers and their families - to officially open the camp and unveil a plaque, ITV News reports.
The trip marked the 65-year-old royal's first visit to the Beacon Barracks since it welcomed more than 1,000 troops from the 1st and 16th Signal Regiments who recently returned from their post in Germany.
Princess Anne has visited the Staffordshire military base just once before despite being named Colonel-In-Chief to the Corps in 1982.
During her tour of the new facilities, HRH also unveiled a plaque to the new Regimental Headquarters of 1st Signal Regiment and officially opened the new Ministry of Defence Stafford Combined Mess.
Anne - who is the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip - also presented medals to seven soldiers including four who served in Sierra Leone following the outbreak of the Ebola virus.

Theresa May praises the Duchess of Cornwall

Theresa May has praised Britain's Duchess of Cornwall for her "hugely important" work supporting victims of rape.
The Home Secretary - who is a member of Britain's Conservative Party - praised Duchess Camilla during a joint visit to the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre in Croydon, south London, where she and the 68-year-old royal met with victims.
May said: "Somebody like her [the Duchess] talking about this, which is not easy for people to talk about, is hugely important and sends a very clear message to victims and survivors that what has happened to you - please do come forward and report it."
The 59-year-old politician also tried to reassure victims that the government are trying to do more to see the number of rape cases that end in convictions increase.
She added: "We have been doing a lot of work with police in how they deal with these issues. Please do feel that you can come forward with your story, the police will take it seriously and where it is possible to bring people to justice we will seek prosecutions."
May's comments come after Duchess Camilla called on Britain to '"build a future" where sex crimes are not tolerated.
She wrote: "This challenging subject has been brought to the fore in recent years with some shocking news stories; these last for a few weeks but for those who have been the victims of rape and sexual abuse the traumatic effects can be long-lasting, not to say life-long. They leave their indelible mark.
"I have said it before and I will say it again: we must try to build a future where we will simply not tolerate rape and sexual abuse any longer."

Princes Harry and William on DIY SOS

Britain's Princes Harry and William joked with builders on the set of 'DIY SOS'.
The 30-year-old royal and his older brother, the Duke of Cambridge, 33, joined forces with the show's host Nick Knowles and a team of builders to help restore homes for veterans.
The brothers - who are the sons of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana - poked fun at Nick and the other volunteers, claiming their own work was much better.
Pointing at Nick's painting, William said: "I think yours is a little bit week. Look at that [points to his own paint job], that's perfect.
"What's going on there? This is the first time you've done this, isn't it?"
However, William - who has children Prince George and Princess Charlotte with his wife Duchess Catherine - wasn't the only one to boast about his efforts as Harry also joked that the builders were welcome to watch him lay pavement slabs if they wanted to pick up some tips.
He said: "If you want to learn then stay behind and watch obviously."
And the flame-haired prince was less than impressed when the show's resident electrician Billy Byrne asked if he could refer to him as "sausage".
Told that's what he usually calls people, Harry replied: "If you're going to call me sausage, it's going to be a very long day."
Harry and William appeared on 'DIY SOS' last night (14.10.15) on BBC One.

Duke of Edinburgh jokes with Scotland rugby team

Britain's Duke of Edinburgh joked with a member of Scotland's rugby team about his daughter Princess Anne.
Prince Philip, 94 - who famously joked that, "If it doesn't fart or eat hay she isn't interested", when talking about his horse-riding enthusiast daughter Anne, 65 - was overheard exchanging banter with Scotland players at a Rugby World Cup reception hosted by his wife, Queen Elizabeth II and his grandson Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace on Monday (12.10.15).
Pointing to Anne - who is patron of the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) - Philip said: "She gives you a lot of support then?"
Clearly trying to impress the Duke of Edinburgh - who is famous for his quick wit - the rugby star then replied by referring to one of his old jokes.
He said: "Aye she does, Sir, but we don't eat hay."
Prince Philip then proved he's still as sharp as ever, despite suffering from a number of health problems over the past few years.
According to the Daily Mail newspaper, he responded saying: "You must fart a lot then."

Tim Pigott-Smith: Prince Charles sent spy to see play

Tim Pigott-Smith thinks Britain's Prince Charles sent a spy to see his play 'King Charles III'.
The 69-year-old actor portrayed the Prince of Wales in the satirical West End play about his future reign, which is set to open on Broadway, and has admitted he suspects the royal sent someone to London's Wyndham's Theatre to check it out for him.
He told the Daily Mail newspaper: "A person once professionally associated with the Royal Family wrote to the theatre to note that in one performance I was wearing a wedding ring but no the signet ring of the Prince of Wales.
"We think they've sent spies in."
Pigott-Smith's comments come after former 'Holby City' actor Robert Powell - who played the Prince in a play of the same name in Birmingham - said he is "very charming".
He said previously: "If you go online, all you get is an official Charles. The Charles I am glad I am familiar with is a social Charles. Then he is lovely and very charming, although there are elements of rigidity in the private Charles. He is very disciplined and likes things just so."

Duchess Camilla: Rape and sexual abuse cannot be tolerated

Britain's Duchess of Cornwall has called on the nation to "build a future" in which sex crimes are not tolerated.
Duchess Camilla - who is the wife of Prince Charles - has spent the last five years working with victims of rape and is keen to change attitudes after learning about their "harrowing experiences".
She said: "Rape and sexual abuse: these are words that make most of us feel uncomfortable. Until recently, they were issues which were not really discussed but now, I hope there is a change in the air.
"This challenging subject has been brought to the fore in recent years with some shocking news stories; these last for a few weeks but for those who have been the victims of rape and sexual abuse the traumatic effects can be long-lasting, not to say life-long. They leave their indelible mark."
The 68-year-old royal has been working with organisations including Rape Crisis, the NHS and the police to help survivors through their ordeals with the help of counselling and other methods of support.
Writing in the Daily Mail newspaper, the Duchess shared: "During these visits I have been very impressed by the professionalism and commitment of the individuals who provide a lifeline to the women, children and men who have been left traumatised and often made to feel worthless through no fault of their own."
And Camilla has now helped to pioneer a new scheme which aims to distribute to toiletries to rape victims to use after medical examinations.
She added: "It is a small something to make women and girls who go through such a terrible ordeal feel just a little bit more human again.
"It won't change what has happened but might offer a small crumb of comfort.
"I have said it before and I will say it again: we must try to build a future where we will simply not tolerate rape and sexual abuse any longer."
