Roger Moore boycotts Dubai Fortnum and Mason store

Sir Roger Moore is urging shoppers to boycott the opening of a Fortnum & Mason store in Dubai.

The 86-year-old actor – famed for portraying James Bond in seven movies – has warned shoppers in the region against the prestigious department store, which is widely slammed by animal rights groups for selling foie gras in the UK.

The expensive pate sees birds force-fed grain multiple times a day until their liver swells up to 10 times its normal size. Although foie gras production is banned in the UK, Fortnum and Mason commonly import the products from French farmers to be sold in its Piccadilly store.

Moore said: "Fortnum & Mason is widely condemned and boycotted in Britain as one of the last department stores that still sells foie gras – a product so cruel that it is illegal to produce both there and in more than a dozen other countries.

"I invite compassionate Dubai shoppers to join us in calling on Fortnum & Mason to end its involvement in the barbaric force-feeding of birds for foie gras."

Moore’s comments come after new footage, as part of an investigation by PETA, revealed the cruel conditions on the farms where geese not only suffer breathing difficulties as a result of their distended livers, but are killed without being stunned first which is contrary to French and British animal welfare laws.

Sir Roger is one of many prominent British figures – including Dame Vera Lynn, Twiggy, Ricky Gervais, Joanna Lumley and Kate Winslet – who have supported PETA’s campaign against foie gras.
