Rik Mayall’s World Cup song reaches top 10

Rik Mayall’s World Cup song has entered the UK singles chart at number seven.

The late comedian’s track ‘Noble England’ – which failed to chart upon its initial release in 2010 – reached the UK top 10 yesterday (15.06.14) following a tribute campaign by fans after his death last week.

More than 300,000 people signed up to a Facebook group designed to get the song to number one and helped it catapult up the chart.

However, ‘Noble England’ was unable to outperform former ‘X Factor’ contestant Ella Henderson, whose debut song ‘Ghost’ hit the number one spot and became the fourth fastest-selling single of 2014 thus far.

Rik, who died at his home on June 9, released ‘Noble England’ in 2010 to spur on the England football team during the World Cup in South Africa.

He said at the time: "I am the lovechild of Britannia and St George. That is why they gave birth to me, so that I could release this single.

"I’m doing my bit, just like every other Englishman, as we stand shoulder-to-shoulder, doing out bit, stiff upper lip – apart from when you’re screaming out the lyrics to ‘Noble England’."

A post-mortem conducted on Rik’s body last week proved inconclusive, but his wife said he suffered an "acute cardiac event" after his morning run on the day of his death.
