Queen thanks young girl for birthday invitation

A young girl who invited Britain’s Queen Elizabeth to her 7th birthday party has received a letter from the monarch thanking her for her "kind thought."

Melissa Poll, six, wrote to Her Majesty asking her if she’d like to join her in celebrating her birthday on September 27, 2015 after she was unable to visit Buckingham Palace in London with her grandmother due to a tube strike.

Days later, the schoolgirl, from Manchester, received a letter on behalf of the 89-year-old monarch stating she was unfortunately unable to attend her birthday party but hoped Melissa would be able to visit the Palace again next year.

The letter, penned by Her Majesty’s lady-in-waiting, read: "The Queen wishes me to write and thank you for your letter in which you tell Her Majesty about your disappointment at not being able to tour the State Apartments at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty was sorry to hear that you and your grandmother tried twice to see inside the palace and that, for various reasons, you were unlucky."

It continued: "Although unable to come to your birthday party, the Queen greatly appreciated your kind thought for her, and I hope you have a lovely time with your family and friends on September 27.

"I am to thank you too for your kind thought in writing about the forthcoming splendid milestone in Her Majesty’s reign."

Melissa told the Manchester Evening News she was "delighted" with the response, while her grandmother Denise was disappointed the Queen – who became the longest reigning monarch last week – couldn’t attend the party.
