Queen Elizabeth attends VJ Day service

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth attended a service at the St Martin-in-the-Fields church in central London on Saturday (15.08.15) to mark VJ Day.

The 89-year-old monarch and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, were among those in attendance at the church service, which was staged just off Trafalgar Square.

The royals took the time to chat with veterans before entering the service marking the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War Two, which brought about the end of the conflict.

After the service, Richard de Renzy Channer – who was awarded a Military Cross for his war efforts – read a poem at the statue of Field Marshall Slim in Whitehall, while veterans and spectators also watched a flypast and listened to further readings at Horse Guards Parade.

Thereafter, veterans were invited to a lunch at Westminster Abbey, where Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, were also in attendance.

Various services marking VJ Day were held elsewhere around the world, including one by the Royal Navy crew of RFA Fort Victoria, currently on operational duties in the Gulf, who lined up to create a bird’s eye view that read VJ70.
