Princess Beatrice pays respects to namesake

Britain’s Princess Beatrice visited the tomb of her late namesake on Monday (16.06.14).

The 25-year-old royal – who is the daughter of Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson – took a trip to the Isle of Wight and the first stop on her tour was to Carisbrooke Castle, the former home of her ancestor Princess Beatrice, who served as governor of the island until her death in 1944.

She also went to the final resting place of the late princess’ and her husband Prince Henry, who died in 1896, at Whippingham Church.

While at Carisbrooke Castle, Beatrice – who was escorted by Lord Lieutenant Major General Martin White and High Sherrif Claire Locke – also took in the Carisbrooke Castle museum, the Princess Beatrice Garden and the First World War memorial chapel, before travelling to Whippingham to visit Priory School to mark their 150th anniversary.

The late Beatrice was the youngest of Queen Victoria’s children.

She was appointed Governor of the Isle of Wight following the death of her husband and lived at Osborne Cottage until 1912, when she moved to the Governor’s House at Carisbrooke Castle.
