Princess Anne gives Dockland Watersports royal approval

Britain’s Princess Anne attended the 10th anniversary of the Royal Yachting Association’s OnBoard programme.

The Princess Royal – who is the president of the RYA – was greeted by 80 children who showed off their sailing and kayaking skills while she visited Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre at London Docklands, UK.

RYA regional development manager Steve Mitchell said it was a great opportunity for Princess Anne the "fantastic" work that goes on in helping children who have never sailed before get the chance to experience the sport.

He said: "Today’s activities are part of a the summer schedule at DSWC. Nearly 100 youngsters will experience sailing for the first time during this week’s sailing programme.

"It’s been a great day, and good for Her Royal Highness to see all the fantastic work that’s going on here. DSWC was one of the first wave of RYA OnBoard centres and through its work with schools, youth clubs and community groups thousands of youngsters have had the opportunity to go sailing for the first time and continue their sailing after school or at weekends. "

The only daughter of Queen Elizabeth spoke to the groups of children before and after their sailing and kayaking display on Millwall Outer Dock and afterwards, Anne put an official plaque on the wall to commemorate the royal visit.
