Prince’s ex-wife has had a tattoo in his honour.
Mayte Garcia – who was married to the late ‘Purple Rain’ singer for four years from 1996-2000 – showed off an elaborate inking on her hand while attending a special event held by PETA in honour of the ‘Raspberry Beret’ hitmaker earlier this week.
Mayte posed on the red carpet at the animal rights organisation’s launch of their re-release of Prince’s pro-vegan song ‘Animal Kingdom’, which they are offering as a free download, clutching a puppy with her new inking clearly on display.
She had previously unveiled the design, which features the unpronounceable symbol her former spouse changed his name to from 1993 to 2000 in the centre, in an Instagram video and admitted the tattoo makes her both "smile and cry".
She wrote alongside the post: "This makes me smile and cry… Love is eternal!! Will remember that every time I look at my hand. To all of you who are hurting …. I’m sorry for your pain as well!! But love him for eternity! Thank you @nspired1 for making such a beautiful piece and @luvinflyingcolors for making such a beautiful video! I’m smiling with tears! And thank you TAC cream for making it painless (sic)"
Mayte has called on Prince’s fans to honour his birthday, 7 June, every year by not eating animal products.
She said: "Prince didn’t want to celebrate birthdays, but to live life, to elevate and educate to the next level of enlightenment.
"My mission every 7 June is not only to celebrate his birth, but also with Peta to remember this man by making 7 June a day where Prince fans go vegan to see how much better they feel and to honour his kind legacy."
Prince – whose son with Mayte, Boy Gregory, suffered from rare genetic disorder Pfeiffer syndrome and died just a week after he was born in 1996 – died from a fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park estate in April at the age of 57.
