Paul Daniels dies aged 77

Paul Daniels has died.

The legendary television magician sadly passed away at his home in Berkshire at the age of 77 after losing his battle with an incurable brain tumour, his publicist has confirmed.

Paul discovered he had the disease two weeks ago following an MRI scan after his wife Debbie McGee rushed him to hospital because he kept losing his balance.

He was being treated at the Royal Berkshire Hospital but decided to return home last weekend to spend his final days with his relatives after he learnt the tumour was inoperable.

Paul – whose real name is Newton Edward Daniels – was offered radiotherapy but turned it down after doctors told him that the gruelling treatment wouldn’t extend his life.

Debbie, who married the performer in 1988, announced the devastating news to Paul’s fans late last month.

She posted the words "with sadness" on Twitter, beside a link to a statement on the home page of Paul’s website.

The statement reads: "We can confirm that one of our greatest magicians and entertainers of all times, Paul Daniels, has sadly been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour. On behalf of Paul, Debbie and their families, we thank you for your kind concerns and support at this sad time and ask that their privacy continues to be respected. There will be no further comments at this time."

Paul hails from Middlesbrough and became one of the biggest stars on television after getting his own Sunday night primetime show ‘Paul Daniels’ Blackpool Bonanza’ in 1978.

He presented much loved game shows ‘Wipe Out’ and ‘Odd One Out’, and in 2010 competed in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

He leaves behind his heartbroken wife Debbie, 57, and his sons Martin, 52, Paul, 55, and Gary, 46.
