Jane Fonda "never felt pretty or confident" when she was growing up.
The actress and fitness video pioneer had a difficult upbringing after he mother took her own life before she became a teenager and she says her father, actor Henry Fonda, was distant and difficult.
Fonda, now 76, also claims her stepmother would insinuate she was overweight which resulted in her developing having self-esteem issues and developing bulimia.
She told People magazine: "I never felt pretty or confident. My dad wouldn't tell me [I looked fat] directly; he would have his wife tell me that my bathing suit was too small or my belt was too tight or my skirt was too short. I became bulimic and anorexic, the whole thing."
Jane - who has now written a self-help book for youngsters called 'Being a Teen' - didn't learn how to love herself or laugh about herself until much later in life.
She explained: "God, I was a serious child. It took [ex-husband] Ted Turner to teach me how to have a sense of humour."
When asked if she could say one thing to her parents, what would it be? Jane replied: "I would say, 'I need you to love me'. But I've talked to a [medium] who has communicated with my mother, and she's so proud of me. My dad's always with me, I know they're both proud."

Britain's Prince Philip told a group of dancing pensioners their routine for Queen Elizabeth looked ''exhausting''.
The Duke of Edinburgh was impressed that the women, all over 60, could take on the energetic piece when they visited the new £19.6 million home of contemporary dance company, Rambert, on London's South Bank.
The prince chatted to the group of women, including 66-year-old retired school teacher, Lynda How, from north London.
Lynda told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: ''The Duke asked us why we do it as it looked exhausting.
"He also asked how did we know when to stop, perhaps when we dropped.
''I danced when I was younger at social events and still love it, it's incredible fun, keeps you fit and it's social.''
The royal couple met the community group, Mercury Movers, during a tour of the building, after it was moved from Chiswick, west London.
They watched as the elderly women danced to 'Mr Bojangles', performed by Sammy Davis Jnr, and copied a qualified dance teacher.
Before unveiling a plaque to mark the opening of the building, the Queen and Philip also watched a group of younger dancers performing part of a new piece.

Suggs has started writing songs for a new Madness album.
The 53-year-old singer has revealed the band are heading into the studio this summer to start recording their 11th studio LP.
Suggs has rediscovered his passion for songwriting and has been finding lyrical inspiration from the people he meets in his life.
Speaking about the album, Suggs told BANG Showbiz: "We're about to start (working on it), I've started writing some songs actually for the first time in a couple of years, I've been doing this one man show and I'll be doing that again for two months in April and May, so I'm trying to write some songs now so I've got something to do with the band. I keep getting caught up in other things when the band are writing albums and I've just been throwing in scraps that have had hanging around for years. So I want it to be different this time.
"I've always written about characters and I've been trying to think about people in my life .. I've always written like that. Someone once said that the band made folk music and we were f***ing horrified, but then you realise the songs are about folk, you're own folk."
Suggs says fans of the ska band can expect the album to come out near the end of 2014 and Madness will definitely be touring the record in December.
Suggs revealed: "It will probably be out at the end of the year and regardless of how albums sell these days - and our albums don't sell too bad we kind of make a bit of money from our albums still - the plan is we're going to do a big tour around Christmas time. The main thing is you're doing new stuff, the people know you're doing new stuff and it keeps the whole thing alive and keeps you alive."
The musician hosted 'An Evening with Suggs' at Porchester Hall in London on Thursday night (20.03.14) to raise money for charity Pancreatic Cancer UK with a line-up that included himself, The Who singer Roger Daltrey with Wilko Johnson and Jools Holland.
Suggs - who lost his sister-in-law to the disease - was joined on stage for a rousing rendition of Prince Buster song 'Madness' by Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko and pianist Jools.
Wilko was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in January 2013 and has already lived five months longer than doctors predicted and Suggs paid tribute to him at the start of the fundraising evening.
Addressing the guests, the 'Our House' singer said: "The most remarkable thing about this evening is that Wilko Johnson is appearing on stage - I'm sure you all know the gig he played here last year was supposed to have been one of his last ... God bless him that he is still around, and we're all very pleased he is. For most people who contract pancreatic cancer they only live for about four months."

Sarah Harding played her first solo gig at London's Kensington Palace last night (20.03.14).
The former Girls Aloud singer performed two new tracks and her old band's hit 'Promises' at the charity event to celebrate Street Child's fifth birthday.
The 32-year-old star wore a stunning £40,000 full-length gown by Yuvna Kim for the acoustic set and admitted she was nervous about stepping out on her own without her old band mates - Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts.
Ahead of the show, Sarah exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "I'm excited but nervous. I'm laying my soul out to bare, it's all very stripped back as well, I'm jumping in the deep end."
The blonde beauty, who has been working on her new tracks with DJ boyfriend Mark Foster, realises there will be people who are critical of her decision to go it alone but it hasn't stopped her.
She explained: "You can't please everyone, there's always going to be critics out there. Over the years you learn self-acceptance is the key. If you can enjoy what you're doing, regardless, then that will come across to everyone else.
"There will be a minority, or a majority, probably, waiting for me to fail, you do feel like you've got a lot to prove [but] I always want to prove it to myself first."
Sarah will head to Africa later this year with Street Child, which creates opportunities for children to go to school in some of the world's poorest countries.
She added: "I can't wait to go to Africa. The work that goes into helping these people and guys giving them opportunities in life. How can you not get involved in something like that?"
Donations to the charity for the next three months will be matched by the Government as part of the 'Every Child in School' campaign.
Sarah will perform a showcase gig at O2 Academy Islington on Wednesday (26.03.14) and hopes to release her album later this year.

Iggy Pop says he would rather be eaten by a shark than die in an old people's home.
The 66-year-old Stooges frontman "seriously" hates the idea of entering into "assisted living" as a pensioner and claims he would prefer to be eaten alive by a shark.
Iggy told Playboy magazine: "I have a beach house in the Cayman Islands, where there are sharks. When I go swimming I think, 'Boy, a shark attack would solve a lot of problems'.
"I seriously do not want to go into assisted living or a nursing home, so I'm hoping for a shark attack. That would be good."
Iggy's comments come after Stooge's drummer Scott Asheton was found dead on Sunday (16.03.14).
Scott - who retired from the band temporarily in 2011 after a stroke, but returned for their 2013 album 'Ready to Die' - died aged 64 due to an unspecified illness.
Scott formed The Stooges in 1967 with his older brother, guitarist Ron, who passed away in 2009, bassist Dave Alexander and Iggy, real name Jim Osterberg.
Iggy said: "Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton's have always been and continue to be a second family to me."
Meanwhile, Iggy has began a new role as a host on BBC 6 Music where he is covering Jarvis Cocker's Sunday afternoon spot while the Pulp singer is on hiatus.

'Silk' is to end after three series.
The BBC One courtroom drama will come to an end following the conclusion of the current series later this month, the show's creator has confirmed.
The series stars Maxine Peake, Rupert Penry-Jones and Neil Stuke as a team of expert barristers.
Creator Peter Moffat told Radio Times: "It has been a complete joy to work with a group of actors as good as this and with a lead actress who I consider to be the best there is.
"The main characters in 'Silk' all have personal and professional stories which are coming to a natural conclusion at the end of this current series.
"It would be dishonest as a writer, and unfair to the integrity of the show and everyone involved in it, to prolong the series beyond what I hope is a powerful and compelling denouement."
While 'Silk' is set to end on TV, the BBC recently confirmed plans for a radio spin-off of the show, to be heard on BBC Radio 4.
Three audio programmes will air in the radio station's afternoon drama slot and will focus on the show's legal clerks.
'Silk: The Clerks' Room' will begin on April 1, one day after the TV series ends.

Ricky Wilson is happy to be a gay icon.
The Kaiser Chiefs frontman says he's been getting lots of attention from gay men since becoming a coach on 'The Voice' this year and is only happy to accept the compliments.
He gushed: "I get a lot more attention from men than women. They say, 'You're hot, I wouldn't mind a go on you', which I find a compliment. I find it harder to please the same sex."
However, the 36-year-old singer remains modest about his newfound fame through the BBC One show.
He added to the Metro newspaper: "The thing is, you can put anyone on TV and they can be hot. It's like listening to a song on the radio, if you hear it every day you'll start liking it."
Ricky will be rooting for his three artists - Chris Royal, Christina Marie and Emily Adams - when 'The Voice' goes live tomorrow night (22.03.14) but it seems his good looks are lost on Christina, 20, as she has her eye on the show's host Marvin Humes.
Christina auditioned for 'The X Factor' when she was just 15 in 2008 - the same year Marvin's group JLS rose to fame on the show.
She recalled: "It's weird seeing Marvin again because he and I stayed in the hotel when he was just setting out with JLS. He doesn't remember me but I remember him because I thought he was pretty cute."

'Coronation Street's' Tracy Barlow is preparing for her fourth wedding.
Tracy (Kate Ford) recently ended her relationship with Rob Donovan (Marc Baylis) after catching him locking lips with Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) but the pair have now reunited and could be set to walk down the aisle, despite Tracy's mum Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) making an effort to talk Rob out of it.
In scenes, which are to be aired next month, she tells him: "I didn't have you down as the marrying kind, Rob. Are you sure about her?
"I love our Tracy to bits but she could start a fight in an empty room, and she's hard work. I see our Tracy as being like asparagus - it's an acquired taste. I love it, but it's not to everyone's taste."
Rob will assure Deidre - who has featured in the ITV soap for nearly four decades - that he is committed to Tracy and her daughter Amy, whose father is Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson).
He says: "I very much approve of the institution of marriage. At the end of the day Amy needs stability. I love them both so I want to look after them."
The wedding may not go to plan, however, as it's been suggested that Tracy may not even show up, as the mischievous couple could be involved in yet another scam.
An insider on the soap told the Daily Star newspaper: "This is Tracy after all, nothing ever goes to plan. Could she and Rob have another scam up their sleeve?"

'The Big Reunion' girl bands could be in line for their own tour after being snubbed from the upcoming boy band tour.
5ive singer Scott Robinson claims bands including Atomic Kitten, Girl Thing and Eternal may embark on their own tour following news that concert promoters have decided to cash in on strong ticket sales among women by launching a tour solely featuring boy bands such as Blue, 5ive, 3T, Damage, A1 and 5th Story.
He told BANG Showbiz: "I'm sure there's talks ... I'm sure the girls will get an opportunity to do a tour as well.
"At the end of the day, we're excited about this tour, it's great for the fans to be able to see the boy bands together as a collective. And if there was a girls tour, it would be the same for people wanting to see the girls. I'm sure there'll be other shows where we inter-mingle again."
'The Big Reunion - The Boy Band Tour' will take place in October and it seems there may be some competition among the bands over who will headline the concerts.
Sean Conlon of 5ive said: "In reality, it'd have to be 5ive or Blue. I'd edge towards 5ive. Blue have been touring on their own, we've been lucky enough to do our own theatre tour in England and Australia, so we've got a lot out of our system. We can't believe we got to play an arena tour last time. It's more of a bonus, really, that we're getting to do this."
And the bands haven't ruled out joining each other onstage.
Scott added: "Antony [Costa] might come and do a song with us one night, and I might do a couple of songs with Blue."
Tickets for 'The Big Reunion - The Boy Band Tour' go on sale tomorrow (22.03.14).

Scarlett Johansson says Black Widow "grapples" with the "trauma" she has experienced in the forthcoming Marvel films.
The 29-year-old actress reprises her role as the popular Marvel character - also known as Natasha Romanoff - in the 'Avengers: Age of Ultron', which will be released in 2015, and will tell the "back story" of the highly trained spy.
Talking at the press conference for forthcoming 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', at London's Dorchester Hotel on Thursday (20.03.14), she said: "You'll get more of Widow's back story in 'Avengers 2'. She has a rich, rich past. She definitely comes from a really dark past, she's had to de-sensitise or de-humanise in way to be able to do and see some of the things she's seen and participated in willingly. And there was probably some kind of people who have that drug description, like mercenary.
"I think she' s sort of now grappling with the fact that she maybe experiencing some trauma from that, or at least that she has feelings about things, maybe she doesn't sleep so well at night. It's hitting her now that she's been acting as a gun for hire, and in doing that she's never really made any active choices. It's like the rug has been pulled from under her feet."
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously confirmed he's been in talks about a film based on Johansson's Black Widow character, and the screen beauty insists she'd like to follow the "progression" of her alter-ego.
She added: "More interestingly, what would probably be to follow the progression of that story. And you know, bring her back home, and see where that leads to. Of course that's all in my imaginary next installment. None of that has been .... We've thrown the ball around a little bit but nothing is in the works for that right now."

Chris Evans went home with "bumps and bruises" after filming 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'.
The 32-year-old actor plays the titular superhero - also known as Steve Rogers - in the Marvel film and insists the injuries obtained on set have "lasting effects" as the stars age.
Talking at the film's press conference at London's Dorchester Hotel yesterday (21.03.14), Evans explained: "There are always injuries. Whether you end up in a cast or not doing stunt work, it's physical stuff. Even when you block a punch, that punch lands somewhere. So you're always going home with bumps and bruises and we are all getting older so it has lasting effects."
The hunk found scenes with Frank Grillo - who stars as military operative Brock Rumlow - particularly injurious, and reckons Anthony Mackie - who plays the Falcon - must have experienced this since they have a number of scenes together.
Asked about memorable moments regarding injuries, he replied: "Any fight with fight with Frank Grillo [Brock Rumlow]. You got to know how to pull his punches. Mac [Anthony Mackie] you must know this."
Mackie chimed: "Nah, we were hitting each other for real."
Evans added: "You hit for real. You don't block Frank Grillo's punch you're gonna get macked. He's a boxer, he doesn't know anything but 100 per cent. "
Mackie joked: "No, that's because he's a mean person."
Scarlett Johansson - who reprises her role as Black Widow who she first portrayed in 2010's 'Iron Man 2' - agrees, claiming injuries are "part of the process".
Johansson quipped: "Frank Grillo beat the s**t out of me. I'm forever wounded from these movies. I mean I had all injuries from 'Iron Man 2' days and I just keep re-injuring them ... that's part of the joy. No, it's part of the process."
