Nick Jonas: It was ‘difficult’ to change my image

Nick Jonas found it "difficult at first" to change his image.
The ‘Levels’ hitmaker admits he initially struggled to evolve who he is as a person because it took his fans some time to realise who he was hoping to be.
He said: "It was [difficult] at first. It took a minute to get people aware of the path that I wanted to take and where I wanted to push myself. I’m really thrilled that the reception to the work and the projects I’m a part of now has evolved to the point that I want. I just want to keep pushing things and growing, and we’ll see what happens …
"There have been a few moments. I think the biggest thing was I had to give up control first and kind of say, all right, I was gripping it all too tightly; let me just take a step back and work with some new people, get creative and not be afraid to just go there.
"So the biggest piece of that was opening up and being willing to explore new things, and then in return I wrote some music that I’m really proud of, that really connected, and found some great projects that I could evolve in."
And the 23-year-old singer likes to "challenge" himself when it comes to his career.
He told HarpersBAZAAR.com: "I think I like a challenge. I try to find projects that will push me in a new way and help me grow. And they are really challenging and require a lot of me, so digging deep and going on that journey is all part of it."
Meanwhile, the ‘Jealous’ hunk previously admitted music is the "best therapist" he’s ever had.
He said: "There’s no better release for me than creating. I just had to do it, I had that instinct. The minute she [his ex-girlfriend Olivia Culpo] left, I was alone in my apartment. I was like, ‘I have to come and get out of the city and write.’
"I came up here [to Mammoth Mountain] with my trusted group of collaborators. Immediately I was OK. I’ve tried talking to people and doing that thing, but I don’t know. [I’m] too in my head and unwilling to open up and get deeper. I feel like the music is the best therapist I’ve ever had."
