Miranda Hart says it’s too ‘exhausting’ to bring back sitcom

Miranda Hart is reluctant to make another series of ‘Miranda’ because it’s so "exhausting".
The 47-year-old actress-and-comedian and the rest of the show’s cast reunited last year for look-back show ‘Miranda: My Such Fun Celebration’ to mark 10 years since the sitcom first aired.
Since making that programme, Miranda has given some serious thought to bringing the hugely popular comedy back but worries she just doesn’t have the energy for a full run of episodes.
When asked what’s preventing her from doing another series, she told Heat magazine: "It’s exhausting. To do a series is a solid nine to ten months for me, what with writing it and being in every scene. I certainly did put pressure on myself to maintain a standard, plus when you film in front of a studio audience, there is another layer of pressure, because you have to write and perform for the big laugh-out-loud moments.
"I do think a studio audience sitcom is a unique pressure for a writer/performer, and I don’t think people really understand that writing mainstream comedy is one of the hardest things you can do. However, I have always said it would be fun to see Miranda and Gary married, so let’s see…"
The positive reaction to last year’s one-hour special show as well as television viewers’ appreciation for the ‘Gavin and Stacey’ Christmas special reinforced Miranda’s belief that there is still a real desire for "big laughs" and "silly characters" on screen.
She said: "I loved the ‘Gavin and Stacey’ Christmas special – I’m a huge fan and it was so great how many people tuned in. There is a need for big laughs and gentle, silly, lovable characters. It’s vital to have art that proves that provides escapism and joy. And when we celebrated the tenth anniversary of ‘Miranda’, it was fab to be back with the cast and very emotional to hear what the show meant to people."
Fans of the sitcom still shout some of Miranda’s catchphrases at her in the street, the only problem is that the actress has forgotten most of them.
She said: "Sometimes people say things and I don’t know what they mean, as I’ve forgotten it’s a line from the show. I have an online shop and it’s always hard to narrow down the products we make, because there are so many phrases people respond to. The weirdest was when someone shouted ‘poo balls’ at me repeatedly, while I was walking the dog. I thought it was an insult until I remembered it was a phrase I shouted in series one to get out of a gym membership."
The final episode of ‘Miranda’ was titled ‘The Final Curtain’ and saw the hapless joke shop owner finally marry the love of her life Gary Preston, played by Tom Ellis.
