Mike Berry auditions for The Voice

Mike Berry has auditioned for ‘The Voice’.

The ‘Are you Being Served?’ actor is desperate to return to his pre-comedy days as a singer after snagging a place in the battle rounds of the BBC One show by impressing judges with his rendition of Buddy Holly’s ‘True Love Ways’.

He explained to The Sun newspaper: "I was absolutely terrified! It didn’t help that I had a cold on the day of the audition so my range was a bit affected by that."

Despite Mike’s initial career as a singer, which saw him have two Top 10 hits ‘Don’t you Think it’s Time’ and ‘Sunshine of your Smile’, the 73-year-old star needed some convincing to return to his musical past and has thanked his friend Chas Hodges – one half of the witty duo Chas and Dave – for giving him the kick he needed.

He said: "Chas is an old mucker of mine and a very wise man. I asked if I should do it and he said. ‘What have you got to lose?’ So why not."

However, Mike – who toured with the Rolling Stones in the 60s – is devastated former mentor Sir Tom Jones, who left the show last year, won’t be sitting on the panel this year.

He said: "I would have liked to have met Tom Jones on the panel, to be honest. Just to say ‘hello’ and shake his hand. We met years ago when I was in pantomime in Darlington."

Mike Berry’s audition will hit screens this Saturday (13.02.16) on BBC One at 7.15pm.
