Metallica have asked to play Glastonbury festival every year.
The heavy metal band will make history by headlining the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night (28.06.14) and have apparently been asking to perform at the Worthy Farm musical extravaganza for years.
Festival founder Michael Eavis told The Guardian newspaper: "I have to see what Metallica do. Metallica have been trying to play for so long – they ring every year, and they’re so polite about it. ‘We’d love to be there, we’re getting older, can we play it now?’
"That sort of thing. The least I can do is to watch them."
Metallica have received mixed responses from music-lovers about their addition to the line-up alongside Kasabian and Arcade Fire, but guitarist Kirk Hammett is unfazed and joked he didn’t realise it was such a big deal since he thought they had already played the festival.
Kirk explained to NME magazine: "It’s entertaining to watch the media circus fret over our little band. I’ve just been kicking back and enjoying it, because frankly – I thought we already played Glastonbury!
I thought we did it with System Of A Down back in 2004 or something. I mistook it for a gig we played in Ireland. But when the initial offer came, I said to our management, ‘Glastonbury, we’ve played it before!’"
