Meryl Streep joins Suffragette

Meryl Streep has joined ‘Suffragette’.

The 64-year-old actress has signed up to take on the iconic role of political activist Emmeline Pankhurst in the upcoming biopic, directed by Sarah Gavron, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pankhurst was the leader of the British suffragette movement, who founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), in the 1900s.

It is believed Streep will have a small but important role in the drama, which will see her alter-ego give a speech on women’s rights during a political rally.

The movie also stars Carey Mulligan as Maude, who is a foot soldier of the early feminist movement, Helena Bonham Carter, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff and Samuel West.

The movie is being produced from a script penned by Abi Morgan, who wrote ‘The Iron Lady’, which saw Streep win an Oscar award two years ago for her role as Margaret Thatcher.

Ruby Film’s Faye Ward and Alison Owen are producing the biopic, while Cameron McCracken, Tessa Ross and Katherine Butler are executive producing.

Filming for ‘Suffragette’ kicks off next week in the UK.

Streep, who is nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her role in ‘August: Osage County’, will next be seen in ‘The Giver’ and ‘Into the Woods’.
