Maya Jama: I’m tired of people assuming women don’t work hard

Maya Jama is tired of the assumption that women sleep their way to success.
The 24-year-old television and radio presenter – who is in a relationship with rapper Stormzy – has admitted she can’t stand the outdated idea that successful women have been handed their top positions by having sex with the men in their workplace.
In the fourth episode of the hit podcast ‘When Life Gives You Melons’ – which was created by lingerie, swimwear, and activewear fashion label Freya – Maya discussed the "damaging" perception surrounding women in top jobs, and said "it’s not the 90s" and that’s not "how a work place actually works."
Panellist Yinka Bokinni – who is also a Capital FM presenter and DJ – agreed with the ‘Cannonball’ presenter’s comments, adding: "There is something quite isolating about being a woman who is doing well."
Yinka also added that many people believe she bagged a job as a radio presenter by "being a b***h."
In the episode – which was entitled ‘Grown-Up Mean Girls’ – Maya and Yinka were also joined by body confidence advocate Chessie King, with whom they discussed everything from defining a best friend to making friends in public bathrooms.
‘When Life Gives You Melons’ was launched by Freya in 2017 and is currently in its second season, which sees Maya joined by lots of other amazing female panelists such as comedians Ellie Taylor and Deliciously Stella, author and presenter Emma Gannon, documentary host Cherry Healey and DJ and model, Georgia Jones.
The podcast is aimed at busy women who are looking for the perfect addition to their commute, and season two – which comprises of six episodes – is being released fortnightly on iTunes, Acast, Spotify and Amazon’s Alexa, between July 4 and September 12.
