Maxwell paid tribute to Michael Jackson by performing one of the late star’s tracks at the Billboard Music Awards.
The 48-year-old singer took to the stage to perform at the annual prize-giving at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday night (15.05.22).
He decided to honour Michael’s album ‘Thriller’ ahead of the 40th anniversary of its release in November by performing the record’s final track, ‘The Lady of My Life’.
Wearing a sparkly black suit and gloves, the singer appeared to have taken inspiration from the late King of Pop’s own costume style for the number.
At the end of the performance, Maxwell finished the song by saying: “We love you Michael Jackson.”
The song features the lyrics: “Baby through the years/ Gonna love you more each day/ So I promise you tonight/ That you’ll always be the lady in my life.”
‘Thriller’ was Michael’s sixth album and became the best-selling record of all time.
It was released on November 30, 1982, meaning it will reach its 40th milestone later this year.
The album became a number one hit on charts across the globe, including America’s Billboard 100, and spawned seven singles including ‘The Girl Is Mine’, Billie Jean’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin” and title track ‘Thriller’.
It sold 32 million copies across the globe and it remains the world’s highest-selling album ever.
‘Thriller’ also won eight Grammy Awards and was inducted into the institution’s Hall of Fame, while it also scooped eight American Music Awards.
Michael Jackson died in 2009, at the age of 50, after suffering a drug overdose.
