Madonna is looking for a man "with a sense of humour".
The 58-year-old musician – who was previously married to actor Sean Penn and more recently, movie director Guy Ritchie – thinks humour is central to a healthy relationship.
During her ‘Carpool Karaoke’ appearance on ‘The Late Late Show’ with James Corden, Madonna is questioned on whether she has a "type of man" and she replied: "Let’s just shift gears … Well, I’m looking for, you have to have a sense of humour and understand my sense of humour, otherwise we are dead in the war."
The ‘Like a Virgin’ hitmaker explained that James’ wife Julia is fortunate because she has married a funny man.
She quipped: "Your wife is lucky. I think the best thing in the world is to be married to someone funny – all that’s missing is a good dress sense."
Meanwhile, Madonna also opened up about her home life, revealing that her four children – Lourdes, 20, and Rocco, 16, as well as her two adopted children, David and Mercy – see a distinctly different side to her.
She shared, cheekily: "I go home and I’m Julie Andrews that is the crux of the matter, I mean give me a nun’s habit.
"I kind of wanted to be a nun when I was growing up. I liked their uniform, it’s kind of perverse, I imagined all sorts of things were going on underneath that big long robe."
And Madonna claimed that contrary to her on-stage persona, she is actually "quite square".
She explained: "My work is rebellious but my lifestyle isn’t rebellious. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t party, I’m quite square. I have a very predictable life, I mean this is a kind of boring conversation."
