Lupita Nyong’o ‘staunch watcher’ of Neighbours

Lupita Nyong’o learnt "quite a lot" about Australian cities by being a "staunch watcher" of ‘Neighbours’.
The ’12 Years a Slave’ star, who grew up in Kenya, where the soap was broadcast on a local network, admits she used to be a regular viewer of the Aussie show and the programme helped her to learn about the country’s geography.
When asked on Aussie current affairs show ‘The Project’ whether she knew there was a city in Australia called Adelaide – the name of her character in horror film ‘Us’ – she replied: "Yes. I was a very staunch watcher of ‘Neighbours’.
"I know quite a lot about Australian cities."
However, Lupita wasn’t aware the city’s nickname was Radelaide, a slang term used when someone is a fan of the area.
When informed about this, the ‘Queen of Katwe’ actress said: "I did not know that."
Following Lupita’s revelation, fans will no doubt be hoping show bosses line her up for a potential cameo, which could see her follow in the footsteps of the likes of Lily Allen, who appeared as herself on the show in 2009, as did The Wombats in the same year.
Spice Girls singer Emma Bunton, Sinitta, and Paula Abdul have also made cameos in Erinsborough, while Natalie Imbruglia appeared as Beth Brennan in ‘Neighbours’ in the early 90s, and began a singing career after leaving the soap.
Last month, Jess Glynne confirmed she had filmed a ‘Neighbours’ cameo alongside Ramsay Street stalwart Stefan Dennis – who plays Paul Robinson – and rising star Bonnie Anderson (Bea Nilsson) in a scene which will air in the coming months.
She said: "I’ve been watching ‘Neighbours’ since I was a little kid, I grew up with up it, it was always there so it’s a very surreal experience to be here on the set and be actually acting.
"My family are so, so excited I’m doing it, it’s a huge moment for them.
"It’s one of those things that I just couldn’t ever imagine doing so I have really had a bucket list moment and to be able to sing on the show is amazing. It was also great to meet the cast."
