‘Liar’ is set to get a second series.
The gripping drama will come to an harrowing end tonight (16.10.17) when viewers will learn what happens to serial rapist Andrew Earlham – played by Ioan Gruffudd – after he assaulted Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) and DI Vanessa Harmon (Shelley Conn), but it may not be the last fans see of the characters as bosses are toying with the idea of creating a prequel that will delve into the background of the psychotic surgeon.
A source told The Sun Online: "Explaining the characters would appeal to fans who’ll be intrigued to see what underlying experiences sparked their actions. Bosses feel it would be the best direction to go in."
Ioan believes he’s become the "most hated man in Britain" – taking the title from Good Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan – since the series hit screens six weeks ago, but has reassured the television presenter that the baton will be back with him by tomorrow.
Recalling their recent conversation, Piers said on the show this morning: "There is an irony – loads of headlines here, ‘Most Hated Man In Britain.’ I sent him an email saying, ‘I really wanna thank you buddy, you’ve bailed me out.’ He went, ‘Piers, the finale is on Monday and by Tuesday the mantel is back with you.’ "
And, although the 44-year-old actor has been heavily praised for his portrayal of the creepy surgeon, his wife Alice Evans has admitted he almost didn’t get the role.
Speaking on ‘GMB’, she said: "The director of ‘Liar’ James Strong, who came to him and is one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met, said ‘Why don’t we get Ioan Gruffudd?’ And apparently the conversation went, ‘Well he’d never do it.’ So he said, ‘Have you asked him?’ So the perception was that he wouldn’t be interested in doing a British thing, whereas in fact that was all he was waiting for somebody to ask him, and just shows how you shouldn’t be too modest."
