Lenny Henry says only the costume team know Broadchurch’s secrets

Sir Lenny Henry says the ‘Broadchurch’ costume team are the only people who know all the crime drama’s secrets.
The 58-year-old star plays farm shop owner Ed Burnett in the third and final series of Chris Chibnall’s ITV show, which this time focuses on the investigation of DI Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) into the serious sexual assault of Julie Hesmondhalgh’s character Trish.
Chris took extreme measures including using high tech computer pass codes on the scripts to ensure that no spoilers leaked from the set, and Lenny admits the only guys who knew the entire plot ahead of filming were the ones handling the clothing for the cast.
In an interview on breakfast TV show ‘Good Morning Britain’, the comedian spilled: "You get each script week by week, you get your pages. If there’s a clue within the scene then OK that’s fine, but you don’t really get the whole thing. [The costume designer will say] you’ll never guess what’s happening to you next week. They might give you a bit of a clue. But you really don’t know when you show up."
As a newcomer to the programme, Lenny admits that David and Olivia couldn’t have been anymore welcoming to him and fellow newbies Julie and Sarah Parish.
Lenny – who will present this year’s ‘Comic Relief’ charity telethon on March 24 – said: "It’s been a fantastic experience to be involved with as a series. This has been very exciting working with Sarah and with David and Olivia. They have been really welcoming, welcomed all the new people to the cast. It’s good to be Ed Burnett with my own farm shop. We don’t want to give too much away. I’m not allowed to say anything. It’s a secret, I can’t tell you."
‘Broadchurch’ continues on ITV on Monday night (06.03.17) at 9pm.
