Lady Macbeth leads nominations for British Independent Film Awards

‘Lady Macbeth’ has topped the list of nominations for the 2017 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
The 2016 movie by director William Oldroyd dominated the list with 15 nominations including nods for its’ star Naomi Ackie in the Best Supporting Actress and Most Promising Newcomer sponsored by The London EDITION categories.
‘Lady Macbeth’ is also nominated in five technical categories including Best Cinematography sponsored by Blackmagic Design, Best Production Design and Best Casting.
The plot follows a woman in 1865 who is trapped in a loveless marriage to a much older man and begins a passionate affair with a man her own age.
Other British independent movies nominated include the LGBT coming-of-age story ‘God’s Own Country’ which sees leads Josh O’Connor and Alec Secarenau both nominated in the Best Actor category.
‘I Am Not A Witch’s lead actress Margaret Mulubwa has also been nominated for Best Actress and the film – by Rungano Nyoni – has also picked up six technical category nominations.
Filmmakers Armando Iannucci and Martin McDonagh have both been nominated for Best British Independent Film for ‘Death of Stalin’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’, respectively.
Hollywood actor Gary Oldman will also receive The Variety Award which recognises a director, actor, writer or producer who has made a global impact.
The ceremony will be held at the Old Billingsgate venue in London on December 10 and will be hosted by ‘Sherlock’ star and co-creator Mark Gatiss.
