Kym Marsh hopes Coronation Street stars’ return to work will give people lockdown boost

Kym Marsh hopes ‘Coronation Street’ resuming filming will give the public a boost during lockdown.

The 43-year-old actress – who played Michelle Connor on the cobbles from 2006 until her exit in December last year – is excited the soap’s stars are heading back to work next week, after ‘Corrie’, ‘Emmerdale’, ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Hollyoaks’ halted production due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Writing in her column for OK! magazine, she said: "I’m glad ‘Coronation Street’ and other soaps will be resuming filming this month.

"TV is so important for lifting people’s moods and keeping them company if they live alone."

Kym also pointed out how returning to work will be a positive for the actors and crew, too, even if the way shows are shot has to change.

She added: "It’s reassuring for actors, like myself, who are keen to get back to work.

"I’m not sure how they’re going to film certain scenes, but like so many things during this time, we are learning to adapt."

Meanwhile, the former soap star has weighed in on the end of the weekly Clap For Carers movement, after founder Annemarie Plas insisted the campaign has "reached its natural end" and should be changed to an annual event.

Kym said: "I think the weekly event has brought me closer to my neighbours and it’s something that brings a lot of comfort to so many.

"My daughter Polly is only nine, but recently she asked me – while we were clapping – whether nurses are paid the same as footballers.

"I told her they sadly weren’t and she thought that was crazy! What I have loved about the clapping is it’s shown our younger generation how important the NHS is."
