Joan Armatrading ‘loves’ listening to Post Malone and Justin Bieber

Joan Armatrading is a huge fan of Post Malone and Justin Bieber.

The 73-year-old singer songwriter – best known for songs like ‘Love and Affection’, ‘Drop The Pilot’ and ‘Me Myself I’ – has a career spanning decades going back to the early 1970s, but she still stays up to date with the current music scene.

She told the Metro newspaper’s 60 Seconds column: “I love the music of the day, so I still love 1970s, 1980s and 1990s but we’re 2024 – why would I not like what’s around today?

“Post Malone isn’t that new now, but I love him, I love Justin Bieber, I really like Lady Gaga, I like Desiigner.”

While Joan isn’t the first person fans would pick out as a Belieber, she insisted the ‘Love Yourself’ hitmaker is immediately identifiable.

She added: “I love him! He’s very good – how he sings. You can always recognise him when he sings with other people.”

Joan – who has no plans to retire and give up her “gift” as a writer – recently released her latest album ‘How Did This Happen And What Does It Now Mean’.

Despite her extensive back catalogue, she doesn’t like listening back to her own music.

She explained: “No, I don’t listen to myself. I listen to me if I’ve just made a new record or written a new song but, no, I’m not going to be putting on one of my songs.

“And I’m not going to be happy with people if I go to their house and they put on one of my songs.”

However, Joan finds it “a precious thing” when she hears how much her music has impacted other people.

She said: “It’s a lovely thing and a precious thing: that you’ve written something and someone gets so emotionally attached to it, it becomes like a part of their life… it’s brilliant!”
