James Bye loves the "collaborative process" on ‘EastEnders’.
The 35-year-old actor plays Martin Fowler on the soap, and his alter ego has been caught up in some serious drama with Walford loan shark Tubbs (Tayla Kovacevic-Ebong), including a hit-and-run incident with victim George coming round form his coma this week.
He told Inside Soap magazine: "I’ll be eternally grateful for these stories. It’s been a collaborative process with the writers and producers.
"I’ve never had the chance to be open with ideas before, but [executive producer] Jon Sen and [head of continuing drama] Kate Oates have been amazing."
James – who has sons Edward, Louis and Hugo with wife Victoria – also opened about his character’s relationship with on-screen ex-wife Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy).
As well as trying to keep his conscience in check, Martin has also been juggling a secret fling with his former flame, and he suggested there will "always" be a chance of the pair rekindling their romance.
He added: "I think a reunon is always on the cards for Martin and Sonia because they have such history.
"While its not Martin who started things up again, he’s in a bad place, so he’ll need someone to lean on. But who knows? We’ll just have to see!"
It’s been a winding road for Martin, but James is delighted at the way everything has played out in Albert Square.
He said: "I was a bit unsure about how we were going to get from Martin the fruit-and-veg guy to suddenly being this bad boy.
"BUt it’s been so nice for the audience to see him spiral out of control in front of them."
