Isabel Hodgins’ vocal cord concern after Soap Awards

Isabel Hodgins thought she’d torn a vocal cord after screaming so much when Lucy Pargeter triumphed at the British Soap Awards.
The ‘Emmerdale’ actress – who plays Victoria Sugden on the show – was delighted for her co-star, who won the Best Actress accolade for her portrayal of Chas Dingle, that she very nearly did some damage to her voice, and was unable to speak the day after the ceremony.
She said: "I screamed so hard when they announced she’d won I thought, ‘I’ve torn a vocal cord,’ honestly I couldn’t talk the day after.
"She deserved it, I was so happier for her."
Isabel is currently playing out a tough storyline after Victoria was raped, and the 25-year-old star admits she found it hard to "know how to respond" to real-life sexual assault victims.
Speaking on ‘This Morning’, she added: "They’re so brave for telling me. They would say, ‘It was exactly the same situation as Victoria, or something very similar.’
"And I was like, ‘For one, thank you but I don’t know how to respond to this because I’m pretending and it actually happened to you.’ I think they’re incredible."
Isabel recently admitted she felt "nervous" about taking on such a huge storyline, because she wanted to do the plot "justice" for all the real-life victims.
She said: "I was nervous when I was first told about this storyline, because it’s a big story and I wanted to do it justice, especially for all the women and men that have been raped.
"In earlier scenes following the attack, Victoria acts like a hermit and shuts herself away. It means that by the time she is convinced to tell the police about it, it’s too late to do a physical examination. This might help people realise that there’s a window for your best chance of prosecution.
"You need to come forward and have an examination so the police can collect all the evidence they can, which would give you a stronger case in court. I hope this will encourage other victims to come forward if something similar has happened to them."
