Idris Elba starts filming S5 Luther

Idris Elba has started filming for the "explosive" new series of ‘Luther’ in London.
The 45-year-old actor – who plays DCI John Luther in the crime show – has admitted it feels "good to be back" in his home town and in his alter ego’s famous coat to shoot the forthcoming fifth instalment of the detective drama after three years away.
Idris – who spends a lot of time in the US now – said: "It’s good to be back in the coat."
And writer Neil Cross has teased that the new series will be the "biggest, scariest, darkest and most thrilling" they’ve ever created as Luther and his new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) attempt to crack the case of monstrous killings.
Neil explained: "We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of ‘Luther’ there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do."
However, the new instalment won’t just see Luther crack a big case, the handsome detective must also face the ghosts of his own past and, whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him and change him forever.
Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, said: "It’s fantastic to have Idris Elba and the team back filming in London and we are thrilled that the exceptional Wunmi Mosaku will be returning to BBC One to join this already stellar cast. Neil Cross’ scripts for this fifth series of ‘Luther’ are explosive and fans won’t be disappointed."
Hilary Salmon, Executive Producer for BBC Studios added: "There aren’t many shows where the first day of filming feels like an event but ‘Luther’ is certainly one of them. Thrilled to be in production with a new series of the show that has set the bar in terms of British television crime drama."
‘Luther’ – a four-part series – will return to screens later this year.
