‘Agent Carter’ star Hayley Atwell has slammed the kiss between Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ as "disrespectful".
The 34-year-old actress doesn’t approve of Captain America’s new love interest because Sharon is Peggy’s niece and she thinks the secret agent – who he fell in love with in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ before he was frozen in time and she continued to grow older – would "turn in her grave".
Atwell pondered how Peggy would react to the news her former lover had moved on with a family member and said: "Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well."
The burgeoning relationship between Steve and Sharon – played by Emily VanCamp – was first teased in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ but in the latest Marvel movie they locked lips shortly after they both attended Peggy’s funeral.
But Atwell thinks it was an "incestuous" storyline.
Speaking at Dallas Comic Con Fan Expo: "I just feel that, you know – I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right? It’s like, ‘Don’t touch that. You can’t tap that!’"
Meanwhile, Atwell has high expectations for Peggy’s niece Sharon and isn’t convinced Steve is good enough.
She said: "She (Peggy) would want the best for her and she’d want her dating a good guy … I don’t know if Steve’s good enough for her. So on all levels, it’s just a big fat no."
