Gareth Dunlop wanted to boost daughter’s confidence

Gareth Dunlop wrote his new single to help his daughter be more confident.

The 37-year-old singer hopes ‘Go Down Swinging’ can “empower” 10-year-old Joanie and help her to be at ease with who she is after she previously suffered a “knock” that left her doubting herself.

He told BANG Showbiz: “I wrote ‘Go Down Swinging’ for my daughter.

“She’d taken a knock to her confidence, and I wanted to write her something.

“I wanted her to have a song that told her exactly how I see her and something that empowers her to always stand her ground and never turn a blind eye to who she is.”

And the youngster even appears in the 80s-inspired music video for the single.

While Joanie was “a bit nervous” to take centre stage, she ultimately had a great time working with her dad.

She said: “I was a bit nervous at first because I haven’t been in a music video before where I am the star, but it was so much fun getting to dress up and just go crazy on the stage.

“Dad and his band were being really funny and they did a really good job as well.”

Gareth previously spoke of how much he loves creating new music in the studio.

He said: “My favourite part [of my career] hands down is the time spent in the studio… after the songs have been written and before all the conversations start on how to get an album out there.

“I love producing…I love engineering… and I love studio equipment.

“There’s such a thrill in the hunt for how to capture something just right, whether it’s turning an idea on it’s head, changing out microphones or even starting a song from scratch again because something just didn’t feel right.

“It’s always felt like a sanctuary space for me with endless possibilities.”

‘Go Down Swinging’ is out now ahead of the release of Gareth’s upcoming third album ‘Welcome To The House Of I Don’t Know’.
