EastEnders’ Sonia Fowler is set for a devastating cancer scare next week after she finds a hard lump on her breast.
The caring nurse – portrayed by Natalie Cassidy – will see her world crumble before her eyes in coming days after she learns her girlfriend Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) has cheated on her and finds the worrying bump in her bosom.
A source explained: "Sonia can’t believe it. They’ve been going through a pretty rocky time lately, but she never thought Tina would cheat. At the time she needs her the most, Sonia can’t rely on the woman who supposedly loves her."
Sonia’s fear is heightened by the fact she learnt two years ago that she was carrying the same mutated BRCA2 gene, which puts her at a higher risk of developing breast cancer, as her mother Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson).
Although her busy-body mum beat the disease, Sonia is understandably at her wits’ end with worry about her own fate and turns to Dot Branning (June Brown) to help her through it.
Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, the spy said: "Together they talk about how worried she is, and how she fears this anxiety will never end. Even if the lump isn’t cancer, she’s still carrying the BRCA2 gene and could get it at any time. The fear is overwhelming and Sonia doesn’t know how to cope with it. She’s got some major decisions to make."
