EastEnders’ bosses have promised Dame Barbara Windsor’s alter-ego Peggy Mitchell will bow out in "style."
The bolshie matriarch is set to break hearts across the nation later this year when she’s dramatically killed off in gut-wrenching cancer scenes but, despite the bitter disease taking her life, producers are adamant the lovable character will be given an explosive and memorable send off.
Danny-Boy Hatchard, who portrays Lee Carter in the soap, told Digital Spy of Peggy’s death: "I think it’s an honour to potentially be a part of that and to be on it at the same time as they are, and obviously with Peggy’s leaving.
"In typical Dame Barbara Windsor style she’s going out in style as well, absolutely, yes. You definitely have to tune in."
However, Lin Blakley , who plays Pam Coker in the soap, believes Peggy’s departure will be one that will stay with cast, viewers and characters for a long time afterwards.
She explained: "I think it will be a shame because she comes in every now and again and she’s always a lovely person to see because she’s so bubbly … But she’ll have a good send-Âoff. And we’re doing the funeral, of course!"
Peggy’s dramatic exit will no doubt have fans weeping into their tissues as the whole Mitchell clan – including mega bitch Sam (Danniella Westbrook), bad boy Grant (Ross Kemp) and alcoholic Phil (Steve McFadden) – gather around to bid farewell to the former Queen Victoria pub landlord.
