Earl of Wessex takes tour of IWK Health Centre

Britain’s Earl of Wessex took a tour of the IWK Health Centre in Nova Scotia, Canada yesterday (02.11.15).

The 51-year-old royal – the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth – stopped by the medical facility in Halifax to meet the staff and patients of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Garron Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

In honour of Prince Edwards’s first trip to the hospital, the IWK Health Centre and the IWK Foundation announced the new Wessex Scholarship, which will be awarded to someone committed to community service and with a desire to pursue a post-secondary degree in the health care field.

Tracy Kitch, the CEO and president of the hospital, told Global News Canada: "We believe the Wessex Scholarship will not only provide much-deserved support and appreciation, but perhaps even develop professionals who commit to a career in health care right here at the IWK."

After he had wrapped up his tour of the hospital, the Prince went on to dish out 62 awards to youths at the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards ceremony, which was originally set up by his father, Prince Philip, 94.

The scheme, which was started in 1956, tries to encourage youngsters to participate in a number of physical activities, community service and outdoor expeditions.

Prince Edward, who has been the chairman of the award ceremony since 1992, said: "This program essentially teaches people how to be able to take opportunities, seize opportunities and how to overcome challenges."
