Doctor Foster will not return for a third series

‘Doctor Foster’ will not return for a third series.

The show – which stars Suranne Jones in the titular role – is unlikely to air a new series ever again, as its writer Mike Bartlett admits he is "done" and has no "burning desire" to pen new episodes of the infidelity drama.

He told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: "We’re definitely done and we’re all doing – certainly they are doing – amazing things. Each of the two series feel like two different novels to me, so it’s not like there’s anything incomplete. It would only come back if we had the right story to tell in the right way – and I don’t have a burning desire to find that story."

‘Doctor Foster’ follows the story of Dr Gemma Foster, a GP who finds her world turned upside down when her husband Simon (played by Bertie Carvel) cheats on her with their friend’s daughter Kate (played by Jodie Comer). As she seeks revenge on her husband, things go from bad to worst.

Mike’s comments come after Suranne also hinted that she was "done" with ‘Doctor Foster’ after two successful series.

When asked if the ‘Doctor Foster’ chapter is closed for her, she replied: "Yes. I haven’t said that before in interviews, as I tend to say: who knows? I loved it, I love [writer] Mike Bartlett, I love [the producers] Drama Republic. Series one was amazing, series two, equally, peaked at nearly ten million viewers and pushed in crazy directions. But I think Gemma’s done."

And Bertie didn’t think the BBC could afford a return.

He said: "It will be difficult to get the band back together. That’s the challenge with British TV, there aren’t the budgets to keep people in golden hand-cuffs with such huge options. It was a blessing we were able to do the second and I wasn’t too busy at that stage. The further we go in time, everybody’s career is doing very nicely. You have to make a big investment in something in order to make it an endlessly returnable series."
