Derek Martin eyes up Casualty?

Derek Martin wants to land a role in ‘Casualty’.

The former ‘EastEnders’ star was left devastated last month when his alter-ego Charlie Slater was killed off in the BBC One soap but he’s not dwelling on the departure and is now keen to join a medical drama because he’s "good at dying."

Speaking on ‘Lorraine’ this morning (03.02.16), he said: "I’m good at dying so there is ‘Holby City’, ‘Casualty’ and ‘Doctors’. you know what I mean, laying in bed and getting paid. I can still go on. I’ve got two new titanium knees and a brand new hip, so I feel brand new."

However, despite his positive attitude, Derek – who had played the lovable cabbie on and off for 11 years – has admitted he did feel a little disheartened when he learnt the producers wanted to write him out of the popular soap.

He explained: "In a way it’s closure. I had 11 years – for an actor 11 years is wonderful – then I only had a couple of bits from the last two years. My agent said that they want to write me out. I spoke to Dominic Treadwell-Collins [EastEnders’ Executive Producer] and he explained. I said, ‘I appreciate the phone call’ and he said, ‘We’ll give you a good send off.’ "
