Denise Welch went sober after she smashed up her flat following a drinking binge.
The 60-year-old TV star hasn’t drank alcohol for six years, and she made the decision after being shown a video of her actions by husband Lincoln Townley, who made her realise she needed to address her problems.
Making her return to ITV’s ‘Loose Women’ on Thursday (07.06.18) after five years, she said: "I’d smashed the flat up, and he picked me up from the theatre that night, spoke to me all the way, told me that he loved me…
"I had complete blackouts. Door was off its hinges, I’d smashed the lamp. I had no recollection."
Denise decided not to drink again after that night, when Lincoln – who had previously given up booze when the couple had a row over their problems – admitted he loved her but wasn’t sure it could work out.
She added: "This man was the love of my life, and I gave up that night and I’ve never touched a drop since. I am proud of myself, I’m proud of us both."
The couple – who tied the knot in July 2012 after meeting the previous year in a nightclub at 6am – have supported each other through their respective battles, and Denise reflected on how her life has changed.
She admitted: "I am a different person now.I’m not saying that I regret everything I did in my past, I had some wonderful years. But there is a side of me, I have lots of shame that I have to deal with.
"Guilt and shame are very different. we all have guilt, but shame is something I have to deal with myself. and I do have a lot of that that I’m working on.
"But what Lincoln and I have as a couple, and what we’ve achieved career-wise in the last five years – it’s brought me to a position that I feel I know who I am now."
