David Walliams is Beano guest editor for 80th birthday

David Walliams is the guest editor for the 80th birthday edition of ‘The Beano’.
The ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ judge has penned 13 children’s books so far, and admitted the iconic comic had a big impact on him growing up.
In his editor’s letter, he wrote: "What I always loved about the Beano was that it felt naughty. It was a comic that you should read under the duvet with a torchlight.
"I don’t think I’d have got into writing my books without ‘Beano’. "I felt rather giddy sitting in the editor’s chair helping to create storylines and introduce my new character to the comic’s fanbase."
The 46-year-old star has lent his talents and imagination to the special edition – released on July 25 – including a new character called Moe, who is loosely based on his own son Alfred.
David will also be immortalised as himself in cartoon form alongside some of the comic’s beloved characters – such as The Bash Street Kids – and creations from his ‘World’s Worst Children’ book series.
He has also commissioned his own Beanotown adventure with Dennis the Menace, his pet dog Gnasher, Minnie the Minx and Bananaman.
Emma Scott, chief executive of Beano Studios, said: "It’s fantastic to work with David Walliams for our 80th birthday bash.
"He’s brilliantly Beano – embodying the daft and rebellious nature which for 80 years has entertained kids and parents alike.
"On its 80th birthday, Beano is more relevant than ever."
The ‘Beano’ – based in Dundee – will celebrate the big milestone on July 30, with the city’s McManus museum renamed McMenace as part of a new exhibition marking the occasion.
