David Blaine wanted to capture the green room’s attention with his infamously awkward interview with Eamonn Holmes.
The American magician was reunited with the TV presenter 18 years after he appeared on ‘GMTV’ and refused to speak during what Eamonn has described as one of his worst TV moments to date.
Instead, David chose to show Eamonn the eye he had drawn on his palm which he told the Northern Irish broadcaster was for "protection".
Opening up about the memorable interview on ITV’s ‘This Morning’, David revealed he got the idea for the stunt because of a noisy green room where none of the friends and family were paying attention to the guests’ interviews.
He told Eamonn: "Nobody was watching their friends go on, so I was like ‘I’m going to make sure that they will stop and look’.
"So I was thinking a card trick would be too boring, it’s not gonna stop the people in the green room from chatting. So I last minute came up with that idea, so I did the whole thing, which i thought was funny myself."
Although the presenter wasn’t amused at the time, David said he quickly realised he’d done the right thing when he left the studio.
He added: "I just took the mic off and went, and when I walked past the green room I looked over into the room and every person in the room was [open mouthed] like they had seen the craziest thing."
Eamonn has spoken about the interview in the past, and previously admitted he was "dying" on air as he tried to make something from David’s reserved responses.
He explained: "He just refused to talk and so I did all the talking and then he showed me the eye that he had drawn on his palm.
"I asked, ‘What’s that?’ and he said, ‘Protection,’ and I said, ‘Protection from what?’ and he said, ‘Death.’ I thought, ‘Well, I’ll need that because I’m dying on my feet here.’ "
