Countess of Wessex is self-isolating after coming into contact with infected person

Sophie, Countess of Wessex is self-isolating at home after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus.

The 55-year-old royal – who has been married to Prince Edward since 1999 – is not experiencing any symptoms of Covid-19 but is following all of the relevant government guidelines. She is not believed to have seen any wider members of the Royal Family since she met the unnamed person who tested positive.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “Earlier this week the Countess of Wessex came into contact with someone who has subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

“She is not experiencing any symptoms, but is following all relevant government guidelines and is self-isolating at home.”

Asked if she had been in contact with the Queen or any other members of the family, a source told MailOnline: “She certainly hasn’t seen any of them this week. The last time would have been before she saw the person who has subsequently tested positive.”

Sophie has carried out a number of engagements over the past week. She spent time at Vauxhall City Farm in London to mark the start of Black History Month and has also visited the National Space Centre in Leicester.

The news comes after Prince Charles, 71, contracted the virus in March. The Prince only experienced mild symptoms and felt that he got away “lightly” after his diagnosis.

He previously said: “I was lucky in my case … but I’ve had it, and I can so understand what other people have gone through.

“I feel particularly for those who have lost their loved ones and have been unable to be with them at the time. That, to me, is the most ghastly thing.”
