‘Coronation Street’ was the big winner at the TV Choice Awards 2020.
The ITV serial drama took home all three of the night’s soap awards – including Best Soap, Best Soap Actor for Jack P Shepherd (David Platt) and Best Soap Actress for Shelley King (Yasmeen Nazir) – and the cast and crew were overjoyed to lead from the front.
Shelley said of her award: "I’m so excited, not only for myself but for Coronation Street and the whole of my onscreen family. Thanks so much to the production team for all the support they have given us with this very important storyline. A lot of people have written to me, and told me how much it has helped them."
Whilst Jack added of his: "It’s my first one but hopefully not my last. Thank you to everybody that voted, it means the world."
And the show’s producer Iain MacLeod praised the whole of the ‘Coronation Street’ team for their hard work through the pandemic.
He added: "The readers of TV Choice are proper telly connoisseurs, so to receive anything at these awards is always great – but to sweep the board is an incredible endorsement of all the graft and grit put in by the whole Coronation Street team. They have moved mountains to keep Corrie rolling in this most difficult of times. And not just rolling, but consistently at the top of its game. These awards are for everyone at Coronation Street – thank you TV Choice!"
Elsewhere, Martin Clunes vowed he and the rest of the ‘Doc Martin’ crew would make sure the tenth series aired in 2021.
He said as he picked up the Best Actor gong: "I am so glad that you still like this show after nine series. You obviously like it enough to vote for me because there was some classy competition this year in the actors category. We’re blown away. It’s a family business and we love making it, down in Cornwall. There are so many people to thank, so many writers, such an amazing cast.
"But the most important person is my amazing wife who has produced every single script of nine series. And I am allowed to tell you there will be a tenth series. We are going to make that next year, Covid or not!"
And ‘Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer thanked her fans for their "continued support" and promised the show’s new series would be "worth the wait".
Speaking to accept her Best Actress award, she shared: "I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for me this year. Thank you, your continued support means so much. I hope that we can bring you the season four you deserve sooner rather than later, but it will be worth the wait. In the meantime take care and thank you very much."
