Coldplay have been announced as the headliners of the first Global Citizen Festival in India.
The ‘Hymn for the Weekend’ hitmakers – comprised of Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion – will take to the stage at the inaugural festival in Mumbai, which has previously been held in New York City every year since 2012.
Frontman Chris Martin, 39, is the creative director of the event, which will take place on November 19 and see the likes of Jay Z and Demi Lovato wow crowds with their performances.
Oscar-winning Indian composer A. R. Rahman – as well as local musicians and Bollywood celebrities – will also make appearances throughout the one-day festival.
The festival aims to use crowdfunding initiatives to raise money for orphaned children, and is hoping to raise enough funds to build 25 new children’s homes across the country.
Global Citizen India spokesperson Arnav Sahni said in a statement: "Our festival combines music with social causes that have an impact and Miracle Foundation has had a huge impact on vulnerable children. Fuelled by Ketto’s remarkable crowdfunding platform, we hope to raise money and awareness so the Miracle Foundation can continue to do their inspirational work."
The announcement of Coldplay’s involvement with the festival comes after they recently announced they would be playing an intimate gig to 2,000 people at London’s Palladium on November 11 as part of an event run by UK radio station Absolute Radio.
Fans can win tickets to the London show through a competition run by the station, although the performance will be broadcast live in full at 8pm on Friday (11.11.16).
